Taqsireh jacket, from Beit Lechem. These jackets traditionally feature three quarter length wide sleeves through which the sleeves of the dress can be seen. The jacket is embroidered with laid silk cord which is couched into place and sometimes filled with satin stitch. From the mid-1920s these jackets were made from velvets, replacing the earlier broadcloth used, and gold cord started to be added into the embroidery. Inspiration for these jackets came from details on uniforms worn by both the Ottoman and British military. These jackets are mostly found between Ramallah and Hevron. This jacket was usually worn for more special occasions.
When comparing this particular jacket to other examples, it could be dated to the 1930s to 1940s. The jacket is made from a black velvet and embroidered in the traditional form and follows the traditional designs found on all other jackets of this type. It is lined in red and green cotton plaid and appears to be in good condition.
This jacket was purchased in the old city of Jerusalem in 1973. Shulamit's daughters explained that since their mother spoke Arabic, she was able to haggle with the seller and purchase the jacket at a reduced price.
